"Green" Bulbs Going To Cost My Hometown Jobs

    cfl_bulb

Bad news for my hometown of Winchester, Virginia.

    From the Richmond Times-Dispatch:

WINCHESTER— General Electric says it likely will shut down its Winchester light bulb plant next summer.

The company said Thursday that about half of the 203 employees at GE Consumer & Industrial’s Winchester Lamp Plant will be eligible for a full GE retirement package if the plant shuts down in July 2010.

Company officials said industrywide changes in lighting-efficiency standards will make the light bulbs produced at the plan obsolete.

Employees can offer cost-saving alternatives to closing the plant. Company officials said the ideas will be considered and a final decision on its closing will be made within 60 days.

The plant, which opened in 1975, is the last of GE’s U.S. facilities dedicated to incandescent light bulb production.

In a phrase, this sucks.  Winchester has already lost much of its manufacturing base, and this would be a big hit to many families.

The story notes that the workers have 60 days to come up with enough cost savings to save their jobs.    Let's hope they can.

How do you know the plant is being closed because of green bulbs? Are you sure production isn't simply being moved out of the country? Are we really selling enough new bulb types to say that the incandescent is obsolete?

The problem here is GE. Why didn't they replace the obsolete bulb years ago? Its all about a priority for profits with a lack of care for US jobs. It is just plain incompetence at the top. Like all the big companies, they haven't learned that they shouldn't destroy their customers. At some point in time, no one will be available to buy their products. LED lighting can be made to last for 20+ years and use only 5% of the energy for the same light. This makes it a perfect high value product that could be manufactured in the US at a good profit; and, it would be good for the security of the country by reducing oil imports.

Convince someone to open a plant manufacturing LED light bulbs. They are superior to cfl's and don't contain the mercury. They would beat cfl's in the market but the government is pushing cfl's.

In a cold area the energy saved by a CFL light is offset by more energy from the heating system. No gain, no loss. Only in the areas where airconditioning is used is there any energy savings. See the problem when basic physics are not understood.
