Pelosi Says What You Already Knew About The "Health Care Surtax"

In a brief meeting with reporters today on Capitol Hill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a few interesting comments about the proposed health care plan and the "surtax" on the rich to pay for it.

Pelosi indicated she may be willing to negotiate on the tax, saying it is on the "high end" and perhaps could change.

More interesting though are the follow up comments to a reporter who asked why, if the government plan is being sold as saving money, would Congress still need these new taxes in the first place?    Pelosi responded that if the health care saving goals are reached, the money could be used to reduce the deficit.

So there you go .. what you already knew.   Pelosi saying that even if the proposed "health care surtax" isn't needed for health care, it may be used as a general revenue source instead.

Instead of messing around with language about health care, those in favor of the plan should be open with the American people and just raise the Federal income tax top-end to 40-plus percent.    At least it wouldn't get hopes up that taxes would go back down if they weren't needed for health care.
