During WW1 the steel mills were owned by JP Morgan,and Presidents Taft&Wilson Administration’s were being overcharged by Morgan’s profiteering ,so they built-up their own competition knowing that Morgan would keep prices low (out of fear,not knowing how long the war was to last,or raw materials availaility),in which it did. As far as the american postal system ? It had worked nicely until big business did a round-about in congress during the 60’s ,getting legislation to greatly reduce their share of the cost,ie.)magazines,shipping cost$handling of their associated products,etc..Now on to Healthcare. If not for the government stepping into the fray, the private industry would have cherry-picked the system cleaned,and still have raised premiums. I firmly believe that a fair,and equitable business model is absolutely necessary today, but at what cost to the private sector when families premiums are estimated at approx.20%/porportion of a take-home paycheck! Finally, the author is spot-on in regards to our current(past 40 years+)governments failure to deal with the issues aforementioned,knowingly pushing our country into near bankruptcy? What a ridiculous comment. If you disagree it would be appropriate to offer some reasoned discourse instead of the nonsense you actually offered. FWIW, my experience is similar to Harvey’s. I used Tricare Prime until I turned 65 and then Tricare for Life. Both systems are better than any civilian type policy I have ever come across. I can’t imagine why you’d make such silly comments.

One more thing. Successful business are successful because they anticipate problems, they proactively identify and respond to issues facing the company and its stakeholders. Governments (politicians) typically don’t want to anticipate problems because they want to tell their constituents how the politician’s actions “saved” the people from some horendous catastrophe. As indicated in the article, “saving” people gets headlines, but anticipating and avoiding problems doesn’t generate headlines even though it still saves people, and does so more effectively and more efficiently.

There is a pretty good model for a decent health care package. It’s called “TriCare”. Used to be CHAMPUS. It is the military health care plan for retiree’s and others who qualify. Of course, it does cost a fair amount of taxpayer dollars, and if implemented nationwide for all U.S. Citizens, would probably not be doable under current economic conditions and laws. But the treatment at participating civilian hospitals, clinics, pharmacy, and freedom of choice are excellent. I’ve also used a civilian employer plan, so I do have a basis of comparison and there are some differences in coverage, but overall they were both good.
