Cybele - If I wanted to live crammed into a box with thousands of others I'd already live in New York City or similar place with an extensive subway system. Public transportation only works when people live and work all crammed together. In Europe, I'm always amazed at how well-paid folks live like rats so they can walk to the station when there are fields and sheep grazing only a few miles away. The economy is more efficient when PEOPLE decide where to live and where to work and where to shop and have the freedom to drive themselves there.

High speed rail is the key? Is this guy kidding? Lowering corporate taxes, capital gains taxes, and the personal income tax is the key. Getting government out of business is another key. I commute 120 miles round trip a day, unless the train picks me up at my front door and drops me at the door of the large corporation I work for and is cheaper than driving ($5.00 or less per trip), you won't find me on the high speed anything. I would rather drive and save the time waste time on a commute that I can do faster myself. I will not depend on the government to get me to and from work. I can stand on my own 2 feet, thank you very much.

Not if public transportation WITHIN cities and suburbs is funded and increased (but more importantly, a safe and non-disgusting alternative to driving). Since their inception, the suburbs have mostly depended on the automobile. We need not only to re-think transportation between metro areas, but re-think transportation within the metro areas themselves.

High speed rail will INCREASE TRAFFIC in the congested city areas around the train station and only decrease traffic on the interstate highways between cities. Unless both connected cities already have extensive subway systems, people have to drive to and from the train stations. Also, you must ADD AT LEAST 2 HOURS to the high speed rail time for ticketing, security, parking, and renting a car when you arrive.
