Should States Vote On Accepting Stimulus Money?

Do we have a stimulus split coming?

News breaking Wednesday night that a few GOP state governors are considering turning down stimulus money, citing concerns about attached Federal strings and the long-term impact of the borrowed money.   Meantime left-leaning blogs are egging the Governors on, suggesting that if they so opposed the stimulus plan then declining the money is exactly what they should do, clearly believing it will never happen.   Is it impossible?

Most states are in dire need of money.    By some counts 43 states are going to run large fiscal deficits this year.   But there are those governors, such as Louisiana's Bobby Jindal, who believe that the long-term negative impact of the money may outweigh even the near-term cash influx, and he is seriously considering turning down the Bayou State's share of the stimulus.

You have to respect Jindal's guts in even suggesting this, and more states seem to be following suit with his thinking.   But while those who oppose the plan are likely hi-fiving over this stance, there is a very real problem with it: citizens of states who may turn down money may still end up paying for the plan and risk getting little in return.

It's why - political pundit blog sarcasm aside - many members of the GOP feel they may have to accept the money.    After all, the only thing worse than having a $787 billion dollar plan you didn't support pass, is having a $787 billion dollar spending plan that you didn't support pass and then getting nothing for the cost.   Debt without benefit is the worst result of all.

Is there a way for states to opt out and yet not have to pay the price?   It's unclear.   The money is so tangled up in various programs that some of it will will hit various states whether they want it or not.    But we need to separate out the national stimulus (energy grid, rail, etc) and the state-specific stimulus.

Here's one possible solution: states can hold public referendum votes on the plan and whether the citizens want the state to accept the Federal money.   If the citizens vote yes, the money comes to them as it would already under the plan.   If the citizens vote no, then the size of the stimulus is reduced by the amount that would be going to the states, along with a tax credit to each state citizen that would offset the cost to the Federal budget deficit (something we all pay into) over a given period of time.

The issue is very complex from a tax and deficit aspect and so I will leave it for people smarter than I to figure out the details.   However it would work, any state that turns down the money would have to see some compensation for it citizens, because the cost to the Federal government would eventually fall on their shoulders and they would've seen nothing from the plan itself.   None of us can avoid the growing national debt.

What started as a comment by Bobby Jindal of Louisiana is now gaining steam among some GOP governors.  Whether they decide to act on their statements we will have to wait and see.

Let's hope they just remember that they can always hold a special election.   Are they costly?   Yes.   But compared to the stimulus cost its pennies.   Fractions of pennies.   Consider it.

I've felt this way for a really long time, that Texas should pull away. Is it really as easy as you make it sound? Just tell me where to sign!

Don't expect any breaks! Only big corporations, UAWs, ACORN, and etc. will get the breaks. The banks and Automotive companies couldn't even find it in their hearts to give the tax payers a break on intrests payments for credit cards, auto loans and on and on... But thanks for your tax dollars!!!

Absolutely the states should vote on any bill that will take money from its citizens or effect them. We are a Republic of the several states and the Federal govenment has been given only those powers to sign treaties, provide for the defense of the several states and manage the government. Calling, writing and emailing does no good because the attitude is we won, and this went for GW as well. Our government leaders have gone rouge on us and it is time that all states declaire State Sovereignty and send their declaration to Obama and Congress. So far 8 have done so and 11 more including Texas are in the planning stages. It is time to take control back of our country and stop the madness.

Well, here we are. Not even the first 100 days. The man in the Whitehouse either thinks he is campaigning still or just loves to fly on Airforce 1. He has signed a bill into law that he hasn't even read, knows nothing about what is in it. He has been out stumping for the "Crisis" (county how many times he uses it in all his speeches) and we are in danger of losing our Country as we know it. I wrote to Governor Crist and begged him to raise my Property Tax, anything, but do not take this money. This money belongs to my Grandchildren and their Grandchildren. Bailing out criminal CEO's and hapless home buyers is not a way for us to spend money. Obama is sending 17000 troops to Afganistan. Don't say that too loud because I believe the main stream media and the administration are trying to hide that from their followers. They need to make more koolaid for their friends before they make that well known. However, there is nothing in that Porkus bill that addresses weapons. So we will be sending our people over there on a budget so that we can bail out corps and banks. Another liberal endeavor. Bette

The socialist/far left of this country wanted change, well they sure got it. What a gigantic screw up this whole situation is. He and those idiots in Congress and Senate have just put the kiss of death on our country. Heck yes, we should be able to vote on this package of nonsense.

Hmmm maybe all the States (not possible) should succeed from the union and form another union, therefor making the current Federal Government inept and should be dissolved based on their corruptive behavor. All Governments shall serve the people and the people shall not idolize a Government

Well now, Governor Perry has decided that we need to accept the money from the feds. What a politician he is. He sounds just like Obama. CHANGE, CHANGE, CHANGE. Sounds like FLIP-FLOP, FLIP FLOP, FLIP-FLOP. With all this extra money, Cities should be able to cut down the fees they charge.

States aka "The People" should be able to vote and reject this plainly pork stuffed can of garbage. Really, are people so foolish in thinking Obama (or any other goverment official) is going to give them a handout?! Who do you think is going to PAY for this mess! That's right, now the truth comes out that it is YOU who is going to pay and your children and their children and so on and so on. I completely agree with the thought of moving to Texas when they wise up and become the Republic of Texas. Really, what was the big RUSH to pass this? Because Pelosie had VACATION! I guess her "vacation" was more important then the economy. I printed off the Bill and was discussed with what I read. By the way I'm still not done reading. How about $$$60 MILLION to preserve the marsh MOUSE! Every American should read this bill and then honestly see if you're happy paying through the nose for it. Like they say....there's nothing worse than paying for something when you don't get anything in RETURN. WAKE UP AMERICA!

What happened to his promise? The same thing that happens to all Democrat promises when running for office. They don't apply once they get the position. It's the typical Democrat mentality: say what you have to in order to get in office, then give the people the finger. Obama promised what he had to in order to make it sound good. That's all... cut and dry. The problem with our system today is that once in office, we can't touch them for years, unless they do something technically illegal that can open them to impeachment proceedings. Aside from that, they can be as blatant as they want to be about what they're doing and we can't do anything about it. So much for the power of the people. But thankfully, we don't HAVE to remain as part of the losing team. The states can still secede from the union under the 10th Amendment. It's time, people...

I can't believe we are going down the tubes. Is this one of those "Wake me when it's over"? routines.

Who knew that when Obama ran on "Change we can live with" that CHANGE was all we would have left when he is done.

The first time I heard Bobby Jindal speak, I really liked what I heard. I say Bobby Jindal for our next President. As for the Pork Bill, I too emailed Pelosi, the Whitehouse, and SC GOP Senators voicing my opposition to the Bill and the only responses I got were from my SC Senators that they too opposed. I am really concerned about where our country is headed with Pelosi, Reed and Obama. I also emailed the three GOP Senators who voted yes (two from Maine) to ask what they got for their vote. I have a hunch Maine has some Pet Project Pork in the Bill. Those Senators should be ashamed and I sure hope their States vote them OUT. The States should vote since our Government didn't listen to the people or better yet a national vote would be great. What ever happend to Obama's promise to put all Bills out for public to comment for 5 days?

Bill

Right on, Charlene. I too live in Florida, and I can't believe that even amidst pressure from voters, he STILL supported this porkulus package! >:( I'm so fed up with the liberal movement in this country tearing down this once great nation from within. I used to live in Texas in my youth, and am seriously considering relocating if they do seperate from the rest of the "union". But I am with you. I'd rather pay a little higher rate in taxes here locally than get soaked for Obama and his "catering to the have-not-will-not's" in this country. These people don't even realize that they're all being manipulated, pure and simple. I wonder if Florida could join Texas and some of these other states in reviewing their 10th Amendment rights. I hear New Hampshire is currently getting their ducks in a row to do just what Texas is considering, along with 20 other states that are reviewing their legal rights under the 10th as well. Perhaps it is time...

Porkulus is now PORKUBUS - IT LIVES!!! AND IT WILL CONSUME US!!!! Head for the hills!!!! States AND INDIVIDUALS should NOT TAKE THE MONEY... Send back your $13 / week tax break and tell them to KEEP IT! And don't do business with businesses who DO take it. Call your state congress persons and tell them not to take the money or you will vote them out at the next election. We the people still have the final say. REMEMBER THE BOSTON TEA PARTY!!! Somebodys going to have to pay for Congress' big bash - and you know who that will be!

I and most of the folks I know are pro-secession. The US Congress has completely abandoned the will of the people and has acted and continues to act in bad faith as does the country's new idealistic socialist president. Texas doesn't need the USA as much as the USA needs Texas. Why you socialists ask? Bocephus said it best...because a country boy can survive. We don't need, nor do we want your meddlesome government in our affairs. We have a well armed militia and as a sovereign state we will recall all of our troops who serve the misguided USA at the pleasure of the "Republic of Texas". Texas can take care of Texas. I vote we let California, New York, Massachusetts, Illinois, and all of the other corrupt socialist states take care of themselves as well. I will keep my God, my guns, my money, my freedom, and my morals...you damn socialists can keep the CHANGE! God Bless the Republic!

In one way, states have already voted to accept the money. Even if they don't take it, they and future generations are now responsible. Easy credit. No way to pay the credit back, the same irresponsible actions that got us into this mess, it wasn't just the banks. There needs to be a return to the constitution and the rights of individual states to prosper, irregardless of the reckless spending and actions of other states. mo

I live in Florida & I have already written to Charlie Crist to turn down the money. I would rather pay higher gas tax, property tax or sales tax before taking this corrupt money. I will move to a state that can be self sufficient & not be indebted to this poor excuse of an Administration we have.

States should be able to accept the porkulus package or reject it. No one had a chance to read the bill. It was forced through by Pelosi and Reid. They are running the country. If Texas goes, I will be moving to Texas where I can get my freedoms back. REMEMBER THE ALAMO

One...count them...ONE! Republican in the California Senate has gone over to 'The Dark-Side' and passed the California Spending Spree. Sheesh... Doesn't matter, they (we) don't have the money anyway. Prepare people. Dark Times ahead. You have no idea how bad it is about to get.
