but, yes. This sort of spending should require a Constitutional Amendment ratified by the States. Supreme Court? Where are you now?

And, no...Texas cannot split up into 3 different states either.

Since the whole bill was rushed without evaluating, and the "people" had no say, I think at the least give the states a chance to vote on whether they want the money or not. Also, I really think Texas should go back to being their own Republic. Can Louisiana follow?

Texas has no right to secceed from the Union. Thats an old lie only told by old Confederates. ;)

Socialism is here and we willingly let its proponents enslave us. It was not difficult! It is a known fact that wild (free) boars can be enslaved and captured easily. Corn (Government Assistance)is provided in a large clearing. After the Boars determine it is safe, they continue to return to the same spot for more corn. Eventually, a fence (regulations and restriction) is put around the area with an opening and corn is placed in the area. Slowly, but surely, the boars return for the "free" corn. When a large number of the herd are inside the enclosure eating corn (those accepting the "free handouts", the captors simply close the gate. Oh, the Boars go wild for awhile, but eventually become compliant and continue to eat the smaller amount of corn that is provided for them. This is one old Boar that did not fall for the trick, and I know there are many others out there. We will fight back to save our Democracy, but this time will use the same tacts as the enslavers. Wake up all you wild boars!

Yes, states should have a say if they wish to accept federal stimulus money. Last time I read the Constitution there was a little phrase in it that said states had rights as well for those items not specifically designated for the federal government. By acceptign some of the stimulus money states would be obligated to accept hidden federal mandates and worsen the situation in those states. Can congress tell me that the problem with the economy in Texas is the same as the economy in Sout Carolina?? Maybe, maybe not ! It all comes down to the democrats wanting more and more power and pandering to future votes.

I so agree with a National Referendum. I still want to know what caused this great big rush to pass all the stimulus plans. If it really were a run on the banks, don't you think that the media would have been on that one right away? We would have known more quickly than the task force set to create the stimulus last year if that were really happening. I want to know what really happened, and when, and who was at fault and I want to see some criminal court actions taken. I also want to vote on this stimulus and the housing stimulus and the auto stimulus and anything else that I or my unborn great grandchildren (taxation without representation) is going to have to pay back. I want a voice and so far mine has gone ignored along with the rest of the tax payers who are holding up this country.

I think Texas needs to do this if for no other reason than to make a point. There is no doubt in my mind that there would be over whelming support for The Republic of Texas.
Bill
While we're at it, could we revisit the 10th Amendment, please. I believe a strict interpretation of that Amendment would answer the President's comment about the Constitution being fundamentally flawed. It would also give the states an escape clause for this "Stimulus" package.

I agree we should vote on this. I know I am bias but everything I see suggests I am not the only one.

What I would really like to see is a "national referendum" on the stimulus. It would be non-binding (I believe Congress doesn't really care what voters want or think anyway), but it would be interesting to see how many people are opposed to the stimulus package and the more recent "homeowner rescue." Personally, I think the majority of Americans are opposed to it, the question is: How big a majority?

well the country should be able to vote on bills this big and that will have this kind of impact which i believe will be extremely bad. the empty suit says we have to learn to live within our means yet they spend like crazy with money we dont have. WHAT CHANGE

The problem we have here is that we don't need the money in Texas, Alaska does not need the money and apparently if La. got the money Naggen would use the corruption to waste it. However, we will all be sending our hard earned tax dollars to Oabma to help Ca. Ca. could make billions by drilling but they would rather have Texan pay for their mistakes.

Your article was very attention grabbing and was just what I was searching for. jeremy

South Carolina should consider this. I have opposed this bill and wrote to all people that I thought would listen. The speaker of the House, the speaker of the Senate and the White House I am guessing, (because I heard nothing back), ignored me. The Govenor, both Senators and my Congressman of South Carolina have responded that they agree with me but are currently unable to do anything to stop this bill. I say yes! Lets allow each state to vote on refusing this money! While we are at it, lets have each state vote on keeping Obama on for his full 4 years. The change that is going on now is nothing I want and I think South Carolina does not want this as well. We wanted McCain!
Get Real
Yes. The states should be the ones to vote on it. They have a much better idea of the status of their economy and besides, I have found that the smaller level of government something is handled on, the better and easier it is to resolve. Feds should not put their noses in where they dont' belong.
Listening In Texas
Texas has a very unique position; given that it has the right to pull out of the United States and become the Republic of Texas. Given that Obama wants to spend spend and spend some more; then once that is approved; let's start over and spend spend spend some more. Maybe Gov Perry should consider a ballot for creating the Republic of Texas and we STOP sending dollars from this state with a surplus to those like CA who cannot control their budgets at our expense. We are already the USSA (United Social States of America). This way, we can then send a very clear message to congress that we really DON'T NEED THEM! Secession! (substitute "Secession" to the words of "Tradition" in Fiddler on the Roof) -- How can it be -- it's madness; it's unheard of...... If proposed by the Texas legislation; MIGHT JUST HAVE THE VOTES FOR THIS! I know MANY people who will vote for it and get away from this insane madness.
