The President chose to make his first town hall meeting to stump for his economic stimulus package in Elkhart, Indiana. Elkhart considers itself the "RV (recreational vehicle) capital of America." Sadly for the cheering folks behind the President in the press conference, his stimulus plan may ultimately do them more harm than good.
The President chose Elkhart likely because his advisors thought it a timely fit in today's economy. According to the Wall Street Journal, Elkhart has shed 8,000 jobs. Its unemployment rate has soared to 15.3% from 4.7% in December 2007. RV companies are hurting, shipping just 5,600 vehicles in December, down 75% from 2007 levels.
Introducing the President at the rally was local Ed Neufeldt. Mr. Neufeldt was laid off when his employer, Monaco Coach, closed three of its RV factories. A centerpiece of Obama's plan is to give many Americans a tax cut, generally between $500-$1,500 per year. Those cuts are said to go to 95% of American taxpayers. The problem for much of Elkhart, Monaco Coach and Mr. Neufeldt is that they likely make most of their bread and butter off the 5% that Obama wants to tax heavily.
Monaco makes 14 lines of RVs. Its high-end "Signature" series are some of the best vehicles on the market and start selling at $628,000. Rarified air for the very rich. Its cheapest model, the "Montclair Sport," begins at $51,000. The mid-level vehicle (8th cheapest) starts at $163,000. Assuming a buyer has $23,000 to put down, he will finance the remaining $140,000 purchase price. At 6% APR, a 5 year loan on that RV will run the buyer about $2,700. Per month. Even the lowest end vehicle using $40,000 borrowed money over 5 years at 6% comes to nearly $800 per month, or nearly $10,000 per year. And that doesn't include fuel for the 15-20mpg vehicles, insurance, taxes or road and toll fees.
Menatime, the New York Times this weekend detailed the other side of what's likely coming: the tax hike on the wealthy. The paper noted that taxpayers making $500,000-$1 million per year will see an average tax increase of $19,700 per year. Those making more than $1 million are really going to get hit, paying an average of more than $175,000 per year in extra taxes.
It's hard to see how saving $1,500 per year will entice a buyer to pick up an RV. Its easier to understand how the likely coming tax increases could quickly turn a potential buyer off one. Whatever your views of taxes and the well-to-do may be, it seems pretty clear which side of that argument Monaco Coach and the good folks of Elkhart, Indiana should be on, even without the Presidential pomp and circumstance coming to their town.
I agree with J and others...
The stimulus is trying to feed the horse from the wrong end. People need the jobs, and we in America need to build something that will sell. Unless and until we do that, nobody's gonna buy a Harley or a Coachman or a home for that matter. Time and time again, we've been shown that the private sector can do pretty much anything required of them and do it cheaper and more efficiently than a bloated and overstressed government can.

I'll bet all of those that thought Obamas' promises of 'Hope' and 'change' were sincere, are probably feeling a bit of 'buyers remorse'. If you really want to understand what went into voting in one of the most liberal Senators in the Senate, check out howobamagotelected.com Or if you are really a civics wonk, find out what president signed the legislation that forced/mandated banking to give loans to unqualified people, with little or no income, to buy homes they could not afford in the late seventies.

RV financing deals generally run 10-20 years, not 5. This is pretty basic. RV's are not playthings for the extremely wealthy. Plenty of Americans buy them and kept places like Elkhart afloat. You have to be both ignorant and unable to use Google to convince yourself that only the superwealth gazillionaires buy high-end RV's. In fact the typical RV owner has annual household income of $68,000 according to a 2002 University of Michigan study cited at http://www.rv-n-motorhomes.com/RV-Facts-Statistic... The same study shows a very nice growth in RV purchases occurring (mostly) before the Bush tax cuts took place. So the idea that taxing people at the levels applied in 2000-2001 will somehow kill the RV market is crazy.
Bryan cited an article by the New York Times that reviews the likely change in total income for people at various levels of income. For persons who are in the top 5% of income distribution, the average after-tax income decline will be 2%, according to that article.
It's not clear that the superwealthy are major purchasers of RV's anyway, but I sincerely doubt that a gazillionaire who makes 2% less this year, will suddenly sell his house, defer the RV and go live in a hovel somewhere.

One aspect of irony missed here is that given Obama and the Democrats passion for the global warming hysteria they ultimately want to put all of these people out of work since they believe that SUV's and RV's are "destroying the planet". I fail to see how Obama can be so concerned about these people now, yet know (or maybe he doesn't given his recent performance) that his climate czar wants to simply eliminate this type of vehicle and the jobs associated with them.

I retired in 2007 and purchased a used GMC diesel pickup and a new 34' fifth wheel (made in Elkhart area). Cost less than $60,000 combined. Our dream was to travel the country and enjoy retirement. I didn't finance either since that is stupid in my opinion. I worked hard and saved money to do this. We have made three cross country trips and love it. You meet the finest people RVing and everyone of them worked hard and saved to do this. This is the "American Way" or what was until recently. I own a Coachmen class A RV that ran about 90k and gets barely 9mpg. We have used it over the past four years for many trips...now it is loaded to get out of Detroit when the whole economy and nation collapses. Obama and congress in general has no clue as to what they are doing. Party lines are not helping Americans get jobs...any stimulus is going overseas to pay for their goods and workers wages. We are a materialistic society that must stop over spending on needless items that last only a few years; to be dumped into landfills. The educated professionals of the middle and upper middle class are hurting as much or more then the poor displaced blue collar factory workers. Nobody offers us any help, I am sick and tired of the focus of congress on getting people back to work building roads...really!? The construction companies will rehire or extend contracts with existing workers over the next decade...you watch! There will be no large influx of jobs; the seasonal jobs will be counted as permanent...you watch, Obama will twist the numbers to show progress where progress is lacking. This country is heading down a path that is dark and gloomy with no real solutions; only politicians appeasing voters to get re-elected! I want to move towards the country, get a farm so my family might be able to ride out what is heading our way...total collapse; the dark ages will return when this American democratic republic fails. Socialism does not work people!

I'm retired, my pension is secure, I'm very fortunate because I can pay my monthly bills which includes health insurance. I also have a small travel trailer that I pull
with a new GM truck I bought this year.
I have taken a seasonal job to pay for using my travel trailer, my dream was to see the
US when I retired but without this job I couldn't afford to. My home heating oil like
everyone elses has doubled monthly. I believe oil is a limited resource, but I also believe speculators on wall street caused the uncontrolled price spike.
I feel the RV industry needs to look at European RVs. They are very different then ours, Size-wise, it is popular in european countries and they have been paying high $$$$ for fuel for years. Yet there industry survives or did with high fuel costs.
Maybe we really need to look at our products and redesign them. Do we need a 40' bus

Concentrate on compact quality and it will sell, we have the capability and the smarts
to do this. I don't think the industry will return to it's previous size but it will
return.

The Financing terms quoted in the article are all wrong. While I agree with the premis, that raising taxes on ANYONE is a TERRIBLE idea, believe me it isn't only the ultra-rich who enjoy RVing, quite the opposite. RV's are financed over 15 to 20 years, much like a mortgage, a $80,000 RV, which is a pretty nice class A is only about $500/ month. Travel Trailers are anywhere from $150 to $200 per month. It's true RV sales will hurt under an Obama Administration, but many of us who are middle class and enjoy our RV's won't be effected by the taxes, we will be effected by the economy as a whole, the frozen financing and the fact that when everybody's jobs are on the line, taking that 3 day weekend to enjoy a NASCAR event or go camping with the family doesn't seem like such a good idea. Another thing that all these idiots, no due respece intended, in congress didn't think about when they lambasted the Big 3, was that no one else makes tow vehicles that can pull not only RV's, but contracter's trailers, horse trailers, boats and a myraid of other things. Believe it or not, outside of the beltway and in most of this country we still rely on our full size trucks, not because we're evil, but because we have to. If all we are left with are Japanese efficency vehicles, the economic hardships that we are experiencing will be a cake walk compared to what will come.

Brian,
You are wrong- america is in this crisis situation because we have been shedding 6million manufacturing jobs + the last 9 years. As americans standard of living decreases, the economy crashes. Period. We need to get AMERICANS working before this economy recovers. I understand cost cutting to make your Wall Street numbers look good for the quarter, but in the long term, they are cutting down their customer base. If you want Americans and auto workers specifically to make less money, fine. Then bring costs of things down to '1985' levels. We have a LONG way to go to get houses down to $75K, don't we? So go ahead Wall Street- demand middle america make less money. Let's see what happens. The economy is DEMAND driven. You lower the standard of living of americans, you can build all you want in China, we ain't gonna be able to buy anything. Wall Street is full of really smart idiots...

I live in wakarusa, indiana where Monaco Coach's Indiana Headquarters were located. The gas prices over the last few years were what really started hurting the RV industry, followed by the credit crisis and now the recession and downturn in the stock market. Basically what I heard from The President during his time in elkhart was that the RV industry needs to take this "opportunity" to "re-tool" in other words, find another way to make a living because we all know how he feels about gas guzzling vehicles and gas prices. Never has he advocated for low fuel prices or RV's. He wants energy prices to go higher so that his Alternative Energy Sources are more viable. That will absolutely kill the RV industry in elkhart county and across the country. If you work in the RV industry, you may want to consider moving into another field soon. If you are a RV supplier or manufacturer, use your business acumen to unearth an energy technology that The President can support, because he has no intention of supporting the RV industry. Listen to his Town Hall meeting again. If he wanted to help get the RV industry back on it's feet, he would have said so.

Speaking of the Stimulous Plan...Notice how the Fox Poll SUDDENLY does not work "Sorry we cannot retrieve the results" Just when the American public actually gets a chance to vote for or against it themselves, and also view the results of everyone else's vote. Try the poll for yourselves and see!! If, perchance, it is working for you, be sure to voice your vote and opinion - while we still have the freedom to do so!!
