If money is being used to purchase stocks; what was the value of when they were purchased and what is "today's" value? Did they go up? If so, at what point will the govermnment sell them, even if it is a little at a time for profit to repay those loans? Or is this just a way to take over and Nationalize the banking industry? I don't see many programs from government that ever get cut; only expanded. How much in interest is this going to add to the National debt? Congress grilled the big 3 for days for only a "few" billion; yet it hands out tens of billions to Citi and Bank of America with what appears to be "what ever you ask for". At least the car companies build something. GMAC applied to become a bank and had approval in what -- 24 hours? Just for the purpose of gaining access to further funds an additional 5 billion! What happened to making this part of GM's loans or are we now allowing the car makers and other companies to apply to different areas for funding of this nature; still continuing to keep the tax payers on the hook; or shall we say... treat us like a mushroom; keep us in the dark and feed us cr*^.

So around 30% or so (129.4 billion) went to help fund 5 companies (Bank of America, AIG, GM, Citi, and Chrysler)which I assume most of those same companies will require additional huge sums of money when it's all said and done. Or we could have given 1.3 million people 100,000 cash or 2.6 million people 50,000 cash, or 4.2 million 25,000 in cash....how many homes have defaulted on mortgages? Do you think 25,000 for 4.2 million people would have helped keep the housing market from crashing? Is not the housing market the source of most of these problems?

Also, I would love to see a detailed list of where the tarp money came from...was it t-bills and if so what is cost...did we print it...or did we waive a wand?

Brian Ask yourself what would happen if Pfizer fell - due to problems. People would actually die. You can always buy a used car. You can't buy a used heart medication etc. You'd think pharmaceuticals should be well protected from risk, in these trying times. Maybe - on the other hand, that's why the merger had to happen. Pfizer would fall without the new blood, er, new drugs.

This whole economic stimilus crap is exactly that. Giving all this money to banks and cutting taxes and government spending does nothing for the working man. Why are companies closing left and right? Because nobody has the money to go out and spend to stimulate the economy. Cutting taxes means basically a whole $30 dollars more a month on my pay check thats not even a weeks worth of gas. I pay all my bills on time and cannot get my house refinanced but someone who is going into foreclosure gets all the help they need. So I ask you how does giving this money to everyone but the tax payers benefit those in foreclosure and the ones losing jobs daily. You are not making their house payment in fact the govenment is not taking a dime out of their pockets or any pay cuts so they have no ideal what the everyday people are going through.

One of the pundits said late last year that the best thing that could happen to the big 3 is to declare bankruptcy. I agree. They need a new business model and won't get it by us pumping money into a failing venture. I believe we should let some of these business fail. Let the FDIC pay out the money to the small investors in the bank, let the govt. buy the homes financed from the banks at current market prices and let the bank board/stockholders/insurers eat the rest. They made the bad loans, they should eat the bad loans. It appears to me that most of the losses by banks and these large entities are paper losses, not actual physical losses. Stimulate the economy by putting America back to work. Bring our jobs back, slow down the immigration of workers taking our jobs, build solar/wind/hydro projects, give tax credits for residential solar/wind/hydro/etc. Change our building codes to require passive/active solar. We have to have more mass transit. Finally, we generate enough trash in this country to power 1/5 of the entire nation. Stop using the oceans and the landfills. Build generating plants that use the refuse to generate electricity. Its a win/win situation

BofA receives $45bb in TARP funds and north of $118bb in loss guarantees and now plans to shift 1,000 jobs to Costa Rica - How American is that?

Wouldn't it make more sense to open up infrastructure work, work on highways and streets so that many more can benifit from the money that would otherwise be a handout The asphault and cement companies along with excavators would have work for their employees, and on down the line and we would get something for the buck, we will have to do it(repair highways) sooner or later anyway, why not have the money do some good.

What is the reality of TARP. I do not hear one word about the real result of this mess and what the government has now done. To me what this results in is the people who should be losing their jobs get to keep them, and those who shouldn't be losing their jobs are the ones left holding a paddle, frantically dipping it in a smelly goey substance. The financial sector has shoved off their poor performance on the public and those at the bottom working on mainstreet are left without a paddle sinking quickly because of it. All these banks involved in this should be bu.rned to the ground, they and their employees should be the ones without the paddle and as long as they are floating down that creek let them float all the way to the ocean and drown. America seems to be more now then ever, who you know, how you look, and nothing whatsoever about the skill, talent and know how that used to guarantee success.

What really gets me is so many people (average Americans) are smart enough to know our country's TARP plan is nothing more than a waste of our money - I have yet to hear of anyone outside of Washington think TARP will do the job it is intended to do, yet our government doesn't listen. Is this not the reason why we fought for independence in the American Revolution - because we were under a government that did not have the same cares of it's own people? Look how far we have come fellow Americans - No longer do we have a government of the people, by the people, for the people! Our government was not created to provide for us (welfare, insurance, etc) and it was never supposed to be allowed to tell us what we can and cannot do (prayer, right to bear arms, euthanasia, etc.). But we all became fat and lazy, whining like spoiled children. This is where it gets us. Too much is decided for us and provided for us. We have lost our voices. The government has grown big with inflated egos now assuming it has full control while treating the people exactly like ignorant children - what do we know - we aren't smart enough to understand the consequences if we don't act now!

Time to throw out the 535 bums in the congress, along with millions of government employees at all levels and start over. If you want to know where your money actually went, check the payroll, benefit, health care and pension numbers of this treasonous batch of criminals,

Somebody tell me why we can't take 800 billion dollars and pay off everybodys mortgages and credit cards. Everybody gets a huge debt break, you stop the foreclosures and that shores up the real estate industry. Everybody has much more disposable income to give back to the economy. Why would this be a bad idea ?

Brian, I saw the TARP list. I lost my appetite. BobH

This is nothing but the elite providing welfare for thier own kind. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but seems like we are now approaching $15 TRILLION in welfare for the rich, thats approximately 100k for the 120+- million households in this country. Imagine what 120 million households could do for the economy if they each had 100k. Seems like there would be no need to bail out the fat cats as they would certainly get enough to get well, from consumers spending. no I'm no economist but the economy is grinding to a halt in spite of trillions doled out to banks, brokers, car manufacturers etc, we the people ultimately pay the taxes and right now we are getting nothing but a red hot poker straight up our keister. If we ever needed another revolution it's now.

Response to George - Thats easy - this money was/is never destined to help us. It's sole purpose is to pay off the loans that where taken out and will never be paid back as well as prop up those that allowed these loans to happen in the first place. Economies all over the world are falling apart, becaues the bank/broker types convinced them to bet on what they thought would be a BIG make money scheme. Too bad it was jall ust a lie! And to think - NOBODY has gone to jail for causing all this!
