“Spreading the Wealth”

By Brian Sullivan

Tonight is the last of the three planned Presidential debates.   The economy and taxes will be a major focus.   Much of that debate centers on the supposed “tax cuts for 95%” claim Senator Obama has been pushing.   The Wall Street Journal dissected that claim recently.

Regardless of those numbers, the Senator also may have unwittingly revealed the true plan behind his strategy: take from those who have and give to those who have less.

The New York Post has an interesting story today where the Senator told a successful plumbing business owner in Ohio that he intends to “spread the wealth” around by taxing those who have the nerve to become “rich.”

Here’s an excerpt from the story and the Post link has the video:

The fracas over Obama’s tax plan broke out Sunday outside Toledo when Joe Wurzelbacher approached the candidate.

Wurzelbacher said he planned to become the owner of a small plumbing business that will take in more than the $250,000 amount at which Obama plans to begin raising tax rates.

“Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn’t it?” the blue-collar worker asked.

After Obama responded that it would, Wurzelbacher continued: “I’ve worked hard . . . I work 10 to 12 hours a day and I’m buying this company and I’m going to continue working that way. I’m getting taxed more and more while fulfilling the American Dream.”

It’s not that I want to punish your success,” Obama told him. “I want to make sure that everybody who is behind you, that they’ve got a chance for success, too.

Here’s my call for your help: can any economists out there please let me know if any “bottom up” theories of monetary policy have ever ended up growing an economy?

Obama - socialist/marxist. If the American public is dumb enough to elect
this Manchurian candidate, perhaps it is time again to remind the citizens what
issues created this country in the first place. No — no need reminding them, they
never knew or cared what the revolution was about due to our stellar school system.

As for those that think Socialism is GREAT, maybe they should take a good hard look into the quality of life of those living in Venezuala. If they think those POOR peolple would not want the opportunity to be free of socialism, I suggest they think again. Except for the leeches.

Only those that are born leeches want socialism. They have zero self esteem and an incredible sense of entitlement. The BHO crowd is playing to those wanting to be able to stay home, eat, drink and make babies and wait for the government checks to roll in.

I find it so amazing at how many leeches we appear to have in this country or maybe it is the main stream media that is trying to make us think socialism is the best for this country.
Should the media succeed in getting a socialist elected you can be certain that the first next step will be to close down any conservative voices on the radio and TV.

Niether candidate is my choice but BHO would do more damage to this country than any politician in history.

Most folks don’t understand - this government is running on it’s own and doesn’t need us anymore. Where else can they produce a bill that we all rejected due to cost. So they reconsider it, add more expense to it and WALA the bill passes. A completly COMMUNISTIC policy!

  11. Comment by Al

Beyond the fallacy of 95% of the population being unaffected (the refundable tax credits to 44% of Americans who, within 3 years of Obama’s presidency will pay no tax in the first place will be paid for by the remaining 56%), providing a disincentive to entrepreneurship will bring about the downfall of capitalism as we know it. We all can’t be takers.

    Wright– Black separatist communist theology
Alinsky -communist his son recruited Obama as aChicago community organizer, Obama’s speeches and play book mirror Alinsky’s book.
Rezko: Connected to Auchi and going to jail
Auchi: Criminal via Iraqui Oil for food fiasco , coordinating his entry to Harvard??
Who the heck has this guy associated with that is not an admitted communist, terrorist or genocidal maniac?
If he does not support capitalism and judeochristian’s right to exist in Africa who thinks he is gunning to see free markets and freedom thrive here? –I know he is not a muslim, either is Odinqa but with enough power and money, Odinga sold his sole with Obama’s blessing.

I will say that tissue paper lines will start forming along with Gulags for those who don’t wish to work for the common good of the mother land. Wow, look at Norway and Sweden for examples of socialism. Maybe my reference to the old Soviet Union was an extreme but the principles are the same and it didn’t work so well for them. Communist China even saw the errors of the leveled socio-economic structure so they have moved closer to a multi-class economic structure (tongue in cheek here) similar to good ol fashioned capitalism.

Sadly, most people don’t realize exactly what is happening here. Taking from the evil rich and giving to the poor down trodden. It has been said that we are the most generous society on the planet. Numbers show that we freely dig into our pockets to help the truly unfortunate without government chiding. My fear is that will stop as soon as the government gets further into our pockets. Businesses will shut down and send more people to the unemployment lines and we will find ourselves as indentured servants to the government instead of the government serving us. Won’t life be grand when the wealthy have to give up the drudgery of working hard and providing jobs that they can live the real good life waiting months to find out if they can get an MRI for that lump, standing in line for the weekly ration of TP, and getting a government ham for the holiday dinner this year for being a good comrade. I’m excited aren’t you Brian?

This should be the number 1 story everywhere. This has to be the first time a major party canidate has publically and without hiding it pushed the socialist ideal of income redistribution. Under Obama his Income Redistrubution Service (IRS) will be taxing wealthier people who work hard like this plummer and giving checks to people who pay no tax at all because its the “fair” thing to do. - This isnt some crazy right wing claim, this is his actual plan. The final nail in the coffin for capitalism in this coutry as we knew it.

  17. Comment by Dan

250K in gross receipts? That’s practically anyone with more income than the paperboy! It’s now the middle and upper incomes Vs. the poor.
I wonder how much Obama will allow me to take home next year…

I left Cuba in 1974 ,.. I’m back in Cuba again ,.. It’s like a bad twilight zone episode ,.. First time I saw Obama speak I knew he was a commie ,.. I can smell them before they even start to stink ,.. I have been blessed to have been able to experience oppression so that I make recognize it’s symptoms right away ,.. Most American have been blessed or perhaps cursed to have been born in the greatest country EVER thus being blind to many dangers like Obama’s tactics ,.. People have been warned but they don’t want to listen (you can bring a horse to water) ,.. It breaks my heart to see this great land headed into this direction ,.. I think the 60’s and 70’s socialist movements are coming to fruition by means of Academia, Hollywood, the Press and it has now infested Washington more than ever. Buckle up my fellow Conservative Americans It’s going to get ugly and most of you will learn a valuable lesson the hard way ,.. My god, what happend to my glorious conutry?

  19. Comment by Dennis

Dear Brian, Did you just figure this out… this has been a part of Obama’s plan from day one!! You act as though you are enlightneing us… the other media in this country will not even address this issue. The fed & bank TSAR Hank hold private meetings with the big banks… did they all discuss how to buy up the weak banks… which ones should survive !! This is FACISM & Obama will bring the rest us the left to install COMMUNISM or will it be the beginning of MUSLIMISM… Take your choice… I am moving to France with Barb Striesand & all the other movie elite.

  20. Comment by Symbolic Damacles

America’s schools have taught this socialist garbage - implicitly or explicitly - for many decades. Why do so many citizens buy into the Democratic Party’s “for the little guy” line? I was watching a movie on AMC last night, one of the characters, a 1950’s high school principal, spouts this priceless line: “We believe in the progressive theory of education around here, there are no bad boys, they can all be helped to find the correct path.” That’s all government and education is attempting to do. Help all of the great unwashed find the correct path. Hah!

  21. Comment by Carole Metheny

Actually, I should be excited about this…I’ve lost most of my retirement account so now I can let everyone else take care of me!!! Glad I’m old and won’t have to live too long under a socialist regime.

  22. Comment by Radarnav

So, in other words: The Liberal wing of the Democrat party wants to PUNISH successful Americans that pay their salaries!!!

It is truly amazing to me that 50+% of the American people are prepared to elect someone to the Presidency in which they know very little about. His resistance to talking “off the cuff” should have been a warning sign. That tactic is classic in a politician’s approach to hiding his real philosophies, beliefs, and positions.

Given the current extremely liberal make up of the Congress (both houses), if we continue down this path by electing Obama and more Democrats, we are committing ourselves and our children to a Socialistic, Nany state for generations.

Right now, over 35% of American workers pay no federal income taxes. Obama’s philosophy will only create more American that sub-optimize their potential, so they don’t have to pay more taxes. That is not the way to grow a country - look at the abysmal mess Europe is in!

Not the legacy I wish to leave my children and Grand children.

  23. Comment by Anne L

I can’t even believe this is how things are going - I’m so disgusted. Why should I work when I’m going to be taken care of by someone else??? Oh that’s right, I’m one of the “fortunate ones” that has WORKED FOR EVERYTHING I HAVE!!!!

  24. Comment by susan b.

The “people that are coming up behind” the plumber should have a chance at success ONLY if they are willing to work for it!!! And definitely not at the expense of someone else’s sweat and tears. This is the “everyone gets a trophy” mentality coming in to play here… and it infuriates me!

We live in the greatest country on earth because we are given the OPPORTUNITY to prosper and succeed, it is not a RIGHT, it has to be earned. Otherwise it means nothing. When you equal out the playing field and give credit where it is not due you rob that person of any sense of achievement and pride, you rob them of character and self esteem. It breeds the “everyone owes me something” attitude so prevelant in society today.

My daughter came home from preschool and told the story of the teacher giving candy to the “bad kids” so they would behave and she said “there’s no reason to be good!” Kind of sums it all up doesn’t it.

  25. Comment by Timw

We get the government we deserve. Soon when production slows to nothing and foreign lenders refuse to lend to us to buy production not made here (that has already happened)the populace will scream and squawk. Unfortunately, a war will be fought to distract and pump the economy and retain power. Think some PC war, like Africa somewhere.

I say give the populist what they want and see how long they can survive/like it. I know I can survive it, and kind am looking forward to it. BRING IT ON!

  28. Comment by Steve Nelson

Our founding fathers would be astonished to learn of the arguments proposed by Obama. Our country was founded on the principles of life, liberty, property and the pursuite of happiness without government intrusion. The foundation of our economic existence - capitalism - is based on an individual’s right to work and profit from his own productive means. Individual rights, freedom, justice and progress are the values, goals and practical result of capitalism. If we elect Obama, the ideology that made this country great will be in extreme jeopardy.

  30. Comment by Al

Success is NOT an entitlement, it is earned through hard work and sacrifice, no matter what Obama thinks. Welfare is another matter.

  31. Comment by Avery Byrd

What do you expect? Obama rode the “free” ride his whole life. How do you think he became a Harvard graduate? He wants hard working people to pay the “have-nots”. Get a clue to why there are some people who are “have nots”? It’s because they have people handing them freebies left and right so they never learn to be responsible. If I am going to spread the wealth I will do it through my favorite charities, I certainly don’t want to give it to our wasteful spending government!

There is a solution to impending Socialism.
    Vote for McCain.

In addition, if we all voted out the incumbent EVERY TIME the problems would all go away.

Doesn’t matter which party they are.
Doesn’t matter if you like them or not.
Doesn’t matter if they bring home earmarks to your State.
Vote out the Incumbent and watch the problems go away.

The one thing everyone in Washington knows is that the American public isn’t smart enough to do that.

I am the wife of a plumber and I have a question…. If we are spreading wealth from plumbers how are we going to spread the cracked and bleeding hands from working in the cold or spread the sweat of the plumber when he is working in high heat… I also would like to spread the alarm clock going off at 3:30 AM to get to work on time.

Well, that is good news for the bums who don’t want to work hard.

  37. Comment by Steve

I am ashamed and fed up watching this country and it’s far left vs far right political wings scheming and trash talking and blaming each other for the political charade we now call government.

The banks set this whole mortgage crisis up. AGAIN! Bankers, ex-bankers, politicians and brokers that screwed the pooch in both the 70’s and the 90’s and are now at it again here in the 2007-8.

They held homes in surlus to create THE false demand. Offered junk paper to create a false demand. Then THEY pulled the plug just like they did in the 70s and 90’s. Bye bye retirement - By By security!

In the meantime you were told to finance beyond your means, you spent freely building their economy, paying thier taxes and so you bought worthless stocks and a few toys - guess who gets them know? The same peoople as the last time. The banks and you’re government.
Stand in line now…. Stand in line….

Our banks and government as team mates take take take. Companies raise health costs, cut bennies and reorganize to show stockholders false profits while they balance their own salaries, industry by industry. They raise home prices to lower OUR stocks. The lower stocks to take OUR savings and retirements, they raise OUR rents to create a buyers market and then they resell you the home you lost when they took it. What’s more they didn’t lose a nickel.

They get cosing costs, vacancy insurances, monthly payments, down payments and they still hold the paper of the property like they did when you signed.
You only tried to buy it, they only meant to rent it to you for extremely high rates and fees.

Yup these political groups from federal to city are screwing the pooche and we can’t even enjoy the smoke afterwards because they’ve over taxed tobacco to pay for illnesses caused by non water-soluble pollution like metal, mineral and PVC dust, asbestoes fibers, black powdered munitions and excessive airborne toxins in sprays and chemicals we use in our hands, hair and habitat. What’s worse thye have you looking at a few liters of hydrocarbons while they dump pounds of black and glass asbestoes filled rubber and composites into the road around you at over 12,000 mgs every 10 miles or so. 1 SUV 40-50 pounds or more of non-fuel related waste per year.
People trees produce more hydrocarbons than cars.

PS These people aren’t done. They can and will repeat these charades every generation because, “WE THE PEOPLE” follow them like a herd of “Mad Cows” with “hoof and mouth disease” “swatting at our own flies” like the good little Republican and Democrat kool-aid drinkers you are.

Heck Palin is probably the first real personm in politics we have seen in years, when she isn’t trying to remember obscure party rhetoric while trying to answer questions from some left or right wing news hound looking to find a revealing sound bite.

I wonder what I would have said if I was asked in the middle of my first interview, what magazines do you read? Uhhh Ebony…Ughhh Military….Ughhhh Cosmopolitan……Ughhhh Mad Magazine - What else.

  38. Comment by Candace

My husband & I will fall into the “rich” category, sad thing is: we are so far from rich, we are just comfortable. We sacrificed and worked hard for 20 years to get to where we are today. We were fortunate to send our children to better schools than we did and we have taught our children by showing them how hard we worked and sacrificed time with them when they were younger. We taught them to work just as hard and not to rely on anyone but themselves. Now the government when Obama takes over the POTUS is going to teach our children “Robin Hood was a good man” to steal from the rich to feed the poor. What have we got ourselves into?

  39. Comment by Gwen

Nikita Khrushchev said: “We don’t need to go to war with America. America will destroy itself from within as Communism takes root.”
Are there enough people in these United States who will vote to elect Obama? Surely not in the face of everything we know about his socialist ideas and proposals. Will Kruschev’s statement be validated? God help us.

  40. Comment by Jack E

I own a car dealership that I can still say is profitable. 33 people depend on me so they can make a good living. I kill myself to control expenses and because we make a $250,000 profit I get to share(under the OBAMA plan) with those who have invested no money, blood, sweat or tears. The only people who should share in this profit are the producers who I am greatful to have here. I hate to say it, but layoffs loom if this guy gets in.

  41. Comment by Henry Paulson

I will answer your call with some very simple help.

NO theory has ever grown the economy.
    Theories simply don’t grow economies,
people do. That may sound too simple but I am very serious when I say that.

    Most of our economic theories
simply don’t account for morality AT ALL.
They are not theories of people but theories more of the habits of animals. We read darwin then try to force darwin economially on our fellow American neigbors.
Humans are more than that. Americans are more than that.
You love your theories more than Americans. More than your own kids some of you.
People are more than animals-with ambition and innovation (and “purchasing power”).
People are people. Pick any religion and go to church. They will teach you why economic theory is not a substitute for the responsibility of any nation’s citizen to all citizens.

  42. Comment by jrosher

“Keep all the $$$ you work hard for”.

Isn’t this what those Wall Street investment bankers did? But didn’t we want to cap the enormous paychecks and ungodly bonuses they “earned”? According to this logic, why can’t they also keep what they “rightly” earned then? Why are we angry at them for being rewarded for what they, too, worked “hard” for?

Where do we draw the line then?

  43. Comment by Richie

Sullivan said “can any economists out there please let me know if any “bottom up” theories of monetary policy have ever ended up growing an economy?”

It was called “The New Deal”, my friend, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt brought us out of the great depression.

Fear will make people accept almost anything as long as it will make them feel safe and comfortable again. Like sheep, they need someone to lead them back into green pastures and promise them all will be good again.

  45. Comment by Trish

If any of our supposedly informed voters had ever bothered to pick up a history book, they just might have seen the parallel between Obama’s policies and those of the Progressive Era in our nation’s history that contributed to the Great Depression.

  46. Comment by Doug Wood

When will we as Americans finally get it through our heads that unless we have term limits we are never going to get our country back. The same clowns get reelected term after term and totally control everything so nothing gets done.
All government agencies except for defense and treasury should be done away with immediately. Why should every dollar we send to Washington be washed through layer after layer of government employees so that 3 cents be returned with stings attached.
Make me dictator for three years and I will return this country back to the form our founding fathers meant it to be.No pay for serving in congress,no retirement, or health benefits. Serve a term in office for your country’s good, not your own.

Barack Obama is a very dangerous individual. It is time that we all get out and vote in great numbers. This is a wake up call

  48. Comment by K. Ross

Holy smokes Brian, this one apparently gets the blood boiling. I see where many postings say that they are tired. I agree pushing against an ever increasing block of ignorance is difficult and most times exhausting. I love the one about sharing the cracked and bloody hands, the sweat from the extreme heat, and the 3:00 am alarms. That says everything right there. The principles of a strong America were laid out by one of the greatest communicators to ever live and hold the office of president. Ronald Reagan didn’t just throw platitudes around, he spoke to each and every person about the things that make us great. He honestly believed in the principles of smaller government, lower taxes, top notch education, and free enterprise. He made us realize that we could do anything and didn’t need government to tell us when, where or how to do it. I miss that man. I believe that we can clobber the socialist movement by voting with our thoughts and not our feelings. One of my favorite quotes sums up the way we should vote on November 4th, and that we need to tell our financial institutions thanks but no thanks. “If you see a man approaching you with the obvious intent of doing you good, you should run for your life.” —Henry David Thoreau

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Income_tax_in_the_United_States#Year_2008_income_brackets_and_tax_rates

How come Obama’s small business tax plan (tax cuts for incomes below $250k a year) is Marxism and 2008 income tax brackets/rates (as seen in the above url) is NOT? I am single and I am paying more tax than a married guy. Is this not spreading the wealth by your definition? Get to yourselves.

  50. Comment by Steve J

Seems like a Robin Hood Government to me. Take from the workers and give to the undeserving. Our government should not even try to take the place of our families and churches. Those unable or unwilling to work are the responsibility of their family with help from their church. Our government is trying to do both responsibililties without success. No one should be punished for working hard and succeding. Further no one should reap any benefits of this great country who is not an elegible citizen. Illegals voting is an outrage. Illegals on welfare is an outrage.

If Obama gets elected we sould go from The United States of America to The Divided Socialist States of America. I really think that if he gets elected it will be the end of the USA as we know it. It has changes so much in the last two months. We are only one step away from being like Europe. It won’t be the America I know and love. It will be the America of those hippie azzes from the 60’s and 70’s. It is all your guys fault. Damn hippies.

Unfortunately for Joe the Plumber, he is one of the true Americans who is willing to work to get ahead instead of making excuses to avoide responsibility. There is no free lunch and what Obama promises to give on one hand will be taken away by the other hand (the Democratic run Congress and Senate). There are none so ignorant as those who refuse to open their eyes and see the truth and combined with their own laziness, ignorance and the rush of the liberal news media to stake a claim on their own candidate (except for Fox News), our nation is increasingly becoming a nation of uneducated, lazy and irresponsible citizens, some of whom are actually legal citizens. Our elected officials know the right words to say and promises to make to a citizenry who is more interested in what they can get than what they have earned the right to deserve.

  54. Comment by Dan from MD

This story and the reaction to it is absolutely rediculous! Obama is not a communist, he is not a socialist, he is not a muslim. Get over it. Stop letting foxnews brainwash you into thinking all of this stuff. Take a look at what a republican president has done to our nation over the last 8 years. And to all that say foxnews is “Fair & Balanced” .. why is it that everytime they have a republican on, they ask the easy questions and are quick to point out any pro’s that they can. However when a democrat is on or being discussed its nothing but pointing out the con’s. You guys do a horrible job at maintaining the “Fair & Balanced” stance that you swear to uphold at all times.

  55. Comment by John

Guy’s the leaders of the democratic party understand one thing - if you make more than the minimum wage then you are rich!

Another point is the FDIC raising coverage to $250,000. We should get ready because that would indicate that they are about to loose even more of our money in the scams that they are perpetraing on us. And when we eventually demand our money (and we will) - get ready for an even bigger bailout to get it! By then a roll of toilet paper will cost more than the fancy paper the money is made from.

  56. Comment by Travis

Forgive Me everyone, but I am partially responsible for the decline of the market. I took out over $140,000 last week. Obama will be elected and my gut feeling tells me that money will be of little worth.
I feel a little crazy for admitting this, but I have invested over $7,000 in wheat, rice, water barrels and other forms of food storage. I plan on preparing my family for a mass panic. I guess my next investment is a USSA t-shirt with Obama’s picture on it.
This isn’t BS. I’m not like Barbara Streisand saying that she’d move to Canada if Bush won, this is for real. I’ve taken A LOT out and invested it in things that I would consider ridiculous in other situations.
One more question. What is my penalty is I remove my 401k as well?

  57. Comment by John

    Reply to jrosher

Yep - they worked hard at stealing money from the rest of us. First there was the fake oil supply crisis and now this financial mess. Manipulation of the market and getting rich betting that American companies go out of business is occuring daily. It needs to stop!

  58. Comment by Mike C

Does Anyone honestly believe if this nut (Obama) get elected, that this plan will actually get implemented by a Nancy Pelosi controlled House without LOWERING that 250K line?

Remember Libs truely believe they know better than the rest of us what is good for us.

  59. Comment by Robert Crewse

Ayn Rand in her great book “ATLAS SHRUGGED” described a world in which the rich were penalized by having their wealth taken from them and given to people who “needed it”.
Ms. Rand was a Russian Jew who left the communism in her homeland and came to America to experience life in a free society where people could rise from poverty by their own hard work and be rewarded for it. The book is antisocialism and anticommunist and should be required reading for everyone in the USA before the election. If Obama is elected it is what we can expect. I’m sure the number of people currently on welfare, the people who need it, will be voting for him since he wants to extend their benefits, or at least he said he wanted to. An Obama win is a win for all conservatives, he will run the economy into the ground, over tax us, put more people on the government dole, Pelosi, Ried, Schumer, Waters, Dood, Frank and all the other leftist will be blamed. This will help pave the way for new republican revolution like we have never seen before, that is my wish. In the mean time pay down your debt, buy nothing other than essentials, save your money stand by and watch the debauchery unfold. 4 years from now we will have the last laugh.

What would happen if all of the people in the US who make 250+ decided not to work any more?

Barack Obama only said to “Joe The Plumber’s” face what the Democrat Party has been saying in it’s platforms and policies for decades. That people are suddenly surprised or shocked is more troubling than the substance and implications of Obama’s comment because it means that people haven’t really been listening closely or just haven’t cared. The people will have a chance to voice their opinions on Barack Obama come election day. Let’s see what the verdict is.

I’d like to reply to Jack OF Diamonds: You’re absolutely right–the Tax Code is a 66,000 page asset transfer/means test document and it should be abolished. Problem is, now one is willing to do what’s necessary to try anything else because of the special interest goodies locked up in the existing code.

    UNASKED QUESTION #1:
Okay, Mr. Biden, if it’s so “patriotic” to pay more in taxes, and since taxpayers can pay extra to the Treasury if they want to, just how much extra taxes have YOU sent to the IRS with YOUR tax returns, “Mr. Patriot”?

    UNASKED QUESTION #2:
Mr. Obama, have you noticed the rotten quality of life for the average guy like Joe the Plumber in countries where they believe in “spreading the wealth around”?

  64. Comment by Joe

Obama and the Socialist maniacs have finally revealed their real intentions. Obama has been faking like he is some kind of moderate while all along he intends to do all he can (his vision of “Change”) to institute Socialism. Given how little we know about this man other than his radical left connections (Wright, Ayers, ACORN Group, etc.), he might just be a communist. “Spreading your Wealth around” is a failed strategy…it has failed over and over again in history…it lowers the standard of living. Obama has declared war on the “American Dream” of being successful as reflected by the accumulation of some wealth and he has formally welcomed in the era of open class warfare against wealth in America. As a People in a Nation for the People we need to do all that is possible to stop this radical leftist movement…sign me up for the American Resistance.

I was planning on retiring in January but hell, most of my savings have disappeared. No problem. I am going to go ahead and retire now, quit paying my mortgage, get my rate refinanced and reduced, and apply for my tax credits. I will be so much better off. Danm I was stupid for working, saving and paying all those bills for all these years.

  66. Comment by Manny

Spreading the Wealth, everybody does it.

Was the stimulus pakage “top down” or “bottom up” economic policy? The ideal of the stimulus pakage was to get money in the hands of regular people so they can spend it, in turn that would stimulate the economy. Stimulus refund or tax cut, it is still amounts to the same, money in the hands of the consumer. That is bottom up economic policy.

How is taking $700 billion dollars from tax payers and giving it to banks not spreading the wealth? How is that not socialism? How is bailing out private companies not socialism?

What else is new with these Dem’s……..!

  70. Comment by Jim

In response to Richie: The New Deal did not grow the economy. “Trickle-Up” economics as implemented in FDR’s alphabet soup served only to prevent starvation and weakly mitigate the mass unemployment. The US did not start to experience real economic growth until Lend-Lease spurred the reindustrialization of the country. It was Adolph Hitler who brought about the end of the Great Depression.

Unfortunately, when the stock market crashed in 1929, FDR did not go on TV to reassure the American people as Senator Biden believes. In actuality, President Hoover’s response was to raise taxes to replace “lost” tax revenue and levied high tariffs ostensibly to protect American industry. In 2008, we are experiencing a similar reduction of market value and a presidential candidate promising to raise taxes and “unilaterally renegotiate” NAFTA (tariffs, anyone?).

God forbid that we are reduced to hoping the Russians invade Europe to bring us out of the Great Depression II.

Hello fellow citizens. On Nov 4 if BHO is elected and you happen to have a few dollars left after recent events, spend it, spend it all, and quickly. You may not have much time left with it so you might as well enjoy it. Dont worry about your mortgage, credit cards and living expenses- it will be taken care of. After all whats yours is mine and mine is yours, right, or is it whats mine is property of the U.S. Gov’t? I’m confused on that matter. At any rate with the apparent rise of socialism it won’t matter if we all were hardworking, mortgage paying, taxpaying citizens or not- your home, cars, possessions, money aren’t really yours anyway. If it is deemed that you don’t really NEED any of the above and someone else does, well you get the picture.

If we continue on this path allotments for home, car, food, general living supplies, are not far behind.

There is only one way to prevent things such as these, just say no.
Once upon a time the citizens of this country stood up against those that would take from us that which we had worked for and earned, and we prevailed. But we did it together, side by side all working together.

So vote for yourself, speak for yourself, stand up for yourself. Be heard be recognized. Help yourself don’t expect others to do it for you. If we all don’t stand up, how did the Pledge go, it after all has been banned, (United we stand and Divided we fall),then we will fall, we will fail.

    Good luck to us all.

It looks like his flag has been designed to replace the US flag that stands behind the desk in the oval office. This man is not running for President of the United States but is salavating to be the President of the World. We are headed for tough times in this great country. God protect us when we all will be required to wear the Obama symbol on our lapel. I am not clear about what “spreading the wealth” means. Does it mean that top executives will have fewer swimming pools and middle class people will be able to make their mortgage payments? Does it mean that the millions of people in the US who can’t go on a $400,000 retreat with government bailout money can eat better or afford health insurance?

In that case, is “spreading the wealth,” as opposed to “amassing the wealth” in just a few hands, such a terrible thing? Granted our efforts should be rewarded, but when wealth is ammassed through cutthroat means, cunning, Golden parachutes to executives of failed companies, taking adavanage of others, and wealth at any cost, maybe we should at least rethink those policies that have such a result.

The lack of knowledge comes from our failing public school system. Take a look at what your kids know about American history… Ask anyone who the speaker of the house is or who is the Vice President. - Most don’t understand how the basic tax system works. Who really pays the majority of taxes,… and it’s NOT the middle class.
80% of the tax revenue is paid by the TOP 20% of income earners.
They are dumbing down the education system and not producing people that are logical common sense thinkers.

The Democrats are doing this and have been for years. The teachers unions are in bed with the Democrats and our tax dollars that fund public education are getting passed on to the teachers unions from teacher salary union dues. Think about it,. you are paying teachers, they pay the union, and then the union sends helps to elect Democrats that are in line with MORE PAY,. LESS accountability,. smaller class sizes etc,. all of which will create more burden for tax payers and not produce better results. More Money is not the issue,. CUT SPENDING and SPEND what you have. -
Some of the best schools are run on the least amount of money per student.

IT ALL STARTS WITH EDUCATION -

Brian I cought your news piece from South Carolina last night on Cavuto. Real interesting on the pessimism that CEOs have on the economy.
I can tell honestly since I’ve followed the news media, the liberal New York media made some critical mistakes this election cycle. The biggest mistake commentors, left wing journalist have done is this:they attacked the average joes, first Gov. Palin of Alaska and now Joe the Plumber of Toledo,Ohio. From my perspective if I was a news producer I called these attacks uncalled for and unethical. Even on left wing talk radio Norman Goldman of Los Angeles, who sits fro Ed Schultz often, called Joe “Unamerican.” Professionally it shows thier arrogance weakness. A smart journalist would do research. But not bash.
Overall those of you in the Business press which I include CNBC,Bloomberg Television haven’t attacked anyone. So some of you deserve the awards. Honestly I suspect in the next few years: NBC,CBS,and ABC to fade into the sunset or morph into another form. The audiences aren’t paying attention to them anymore. Who knows even the View could fade in time. Last night I started reading Revulionary Wealth by Alvin and Heidi Toffler which they examine the new economy, new wealth and where its going to come from. I just got started on it last night. But they’re looking forward and they see the consumer rather the prosumer generating the powershift. Just imagine how a prosumer with a new inoventive idea could shake up the big dinosuar three like Fox Broadcasting did when it debuted twenty years ago.

    Dear Arleen
I can explain what spreding the wealth is.
First year you take it from the rich, the second year from the midlle class and third year everybody is poor.I am not kidding because i experienced it some 40 years ago.
Just look at Cuba,Venezuala,North Korea and other countries whih followed this methodology. If you take the money from investors who is going to give you job.Yes for a while you can argue that the government can give you job.Trust me I have studied Marx/Leninism becase I had to.And it is not fan to watch the presidential candidate
even thinking about this idea. How wuold you like the government to come to your house and tell you to move into smaller one because they need it for the larger family.
What id Obama proposing is the same exept it may take some time to get to that point
All what I am asking you to think about it and when you are still comfortable with it then vote Obama.I hope most of us will understand and thik about it.
I do not need to thik it over-I have experience it.

His comment of “spreading the wealth” may have been the final straw. Americans who get up and go to work every day, pay taxes and watch those who don’t,(ex: New Orleans residents after Katrina), sit on their porches and wait for the check to come in, need to speak loudly and clearly on Nov. 4. I’d like to reply to Arleen. I do not believe that it is the job of government to regulate the number of swimming pools or sizes of houses or number cars or kinds of cars, etc. It is also not the job of the government to regulate salaries or bonuses, etc.; these are matters for the people who govern the companies through boards of directors. Everyone should be able to “amass wealth” to the extent of their abilities and creativity. “Spreading the wealth” or wealth redistribution is just plain wrong.

    Arleen,

Please don’t confuse what Mr. Obama is suggesting as a way to punish the big corporations for the greed of a few on wall street and in washington.

Most of those that were involved on Wall Street are either gone of thier companies are falling apart. There is little that we can do regarding this situation. The best we can hope for is that the FBI can provide enough evidence thru investigations to prosecute some of these CEO’s and companies.

Washington has already show that it will be protecting its own. I see the Senate and Congress calling in CEO’s for questioning, but were are the committees that are investigating the Criminal acts within it’s own ranks.

What do you think will happen when it is completely Democratic across the board. There will be no one to question anything and no one to stop the Pelosi’s and Dodds from doing what ever they want.

Regardless of your political affiliations, this cannot be a good scenario for the Average American. There will be no more Checks and Balances.

Make no mistake, if Obama’s tax plan is put into effect, the larger corporations will just pass the tax burden on to the consumers, and it will be the average middle class american paying his taxes that will once again get the shaft.

Remember $250,000 in NY or LA is not alot of Money, plus this is really minimal for small business’s.

His plan in reality is to take from all those paying taxes from the rich to the middle class and redistribute thier money to those that do not contribute to the system.

I don’t really understand how anyone can justify this as being a good thing for America.

Think about it, it this were your children, you would be telling them, don’t worry about it, you don’t have to go out and make your own way, We as your parents will fund you forever.

Obama is just increasing the class warfare. His view’s on taxes, school programs, etc. Are so far to the left, it makes your head spin.

He just has a way of saying it to people to make them think they are getting something for nothing, when in reality, almost everyone will end up paying thru thier nose one way or another.

  89. Comment by Grant

Sen. Obama says he is willing to pay more taxes. There is no law against sending donations to the U.S. Treasury and I am curious as to just how many he and his staffers have sent over the years. I will bet every last drop of my blood he hasn’t paid one cent more than what is required. Maybe Warren Buffet and any other liberals that are feeling guilty about their success should sign all of their assests over to the government now if they believe in the good news of socialism.

There are no incentives for success in socialist societies. There are however, threats against life and liberty for failure to meet your quota. If you don’t perform up to government standards you are sent to a work camp, not camp couch waiting on your Social Security Check. A serious reality check for the entitlement bunch would be to eliminate welfare entirely. This would be sure to drop the unemployment rate. There are jobs being created in America but why work a low paying job if a check comes every month wether you work or not?

When was the last time you heard of a Communist/Socialist Nation being on the cutting edge of technology. Yes, I am aware that China has a space program, but the work has already been done for them. I am also aware that the U.S.S.R. beat us in several space races (while millions of their people starved.)

“The man has almost no qualifications for the job other than having a sonorous voice and a good stage presence. He seems presidential to 40% of America because they have all “seen the movie”. He has the “President Palmer” (Dennis Haysbert) appeal that they have grown to appreciate over the years of watching 24. If appearing presidential is all that one need to become President of the United States, then Martin Sheen or Dennis Haysbert are just as qualified, actually more because they each have had several years experience pretending to be President and they were so good at it they were paid millions of dollars. It wouldn’t make a difference because they are all extreme leftists, but at least we know more about the aforementioned faux Presidents (Sheen and Haysbert). Personally, I would prefer James Earl Jones. He seems to have much more gravitas and seems more circumspect in his movies.

Sullivan said “can any economists out there please let me know if any “bottom up” theories of monetary policy have ever ended up growing an economy?”

It was called “The New Deal”, my friend, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt brought us out of the great depression.

    _____________________________________________________________________________________

Actually, no my freind it did little to boost the economy. Ill be it that it stabalized it some and prevented any further falling (not that there was much further you could go). The thing that actually ended the great depression was this little event we like to call….. World War 2. Due to the huge influx of demand of manufactured goods (militarys around the world) the U.S., which was virtually untouched by the war, had its economy start to boom. look at the facts and figures, and you will see that prior to the outbreak of ww2 the economy was still very poor, but just as it started really going, the U.S. economy soared. In fact, you will really see this out of many wars where the producing countries are relativly untouched by the war (hard to build anything when your factories get destroyed) if you care to look at Japan prior to heavy engagments with the U.S. you will see that its economy was begining to grow and strengthen, same with germany for that matter. And after ww2, the new deal polocies were pretty much discontinued, the economy was booming and world was getting set for the cold war.

We don’t need to speculate on the outcome of “bottom up” theories of monetary policy, or wonder if these theories in practice have ever ended up growing an economy? The 20th century alone has numerous living, practical examples of all degrees of socialist societies - more tested examples to choose from than any other time period in world history. Simply pick one that has developed a stronger, more powerful economy than what our current capitalist system has built here in the US. Pick one where the repressed, underpriveledged, disadvantaged people of the world are begging to enter and become citizens - in order for a chance to improve their lives. If that “better” system exists elsewhere, then let’s duplicate it here. If not - there is nothing left to discuss on the issue.

It is hard for me as a 30 year old to believe ignorance and apathy that has been fostered in this country. Most of the people voting for Obama do not have any idea what this guy stands for, and worse than that, the ones who do know don’t care. The comparison of this guy to Robin Hood is incorrect. Robin Hood took from the State and gave to the people. Obama wants to take from you. My wife works everyday with the people Obama wants to “spread the wealth to”. I can tell you this. Although his idea of giving to them so they have the same opportunities you had sounds noble, it cannot be achieved. The government has already given many (not all) people who fall into the low income category just enough reasons not to make something of themselves. I could go on for hours about medicare, welfare, W.I.C. and all the other failed government programs that do nothing but enable and encourage people to expect the government to take care of them. Why would any sane individual think it is a good idea to further penalize those who help generate jobs and grow the economy. I can’t believe that this guy is even a real consideration for the presidency of the United States of America. HE IS A SOCIALIST. If he is elected it will be a grim turning point in our countries history and I fear the consequences my children will reap. My last point is that, when I was growing up, my parents always told me, “You are known, by the company you keep”…amazing how that no longer applies…

I think you can see the failing of our education system in a few of the responses.
I don’t care what a CEO makes if he/she is growing the business. I am not a victim and enjoy the opportunity to have my own business or become a CEO. I am offended by pseudo private companies (Fannie ad Freddie) whose CEO’s are pals of our politicians from both parties and profit by it. The government produces nothing, creates nothing and profits only by taking from the working person. Every person in this country is responsible for their decisions and must live with them. Our government has created a victim mentality where they would have you believe someone else is responsible for your bad situation.
Total manure, you are responsible. Look at Joe the plumber, They have tried to mask Obama’s answer by questioning Joe’s personal life. The question and answer are valid!!!

Obama’s first, second, and third priority is to get elected. If that means pandering to large numbers of people who want a free ride, he’ll be happy to throw them a few crumbs as a way to get their votes. He will also turn democracy and capitalism on it’s head, and villainize the affluent and successful in our society, in order to rally the masses behind him. With evangelical zeal Obama will convince his followers to replace reason with hope and belief … to blindly follow him … never challenge him … and embrace his words as gospel. In the real, and unforgiving world of economics however, when you immediately gratify everyone by feasting on the goose that lays the golden eggs, the economy looses it’s ability to continue generating growth and wealth. Obama is promising everyone a piece of the pie, whether they helped bake it, or not … but, only in a socialistic, or communist state do the non-contributors demand to share equally in the property that belongs to others. Immediate gratification, and getting something for nothing, is like a drug to the malcontents, but in the big picture, every farmer knows that you never eat your seed crop. If Obama gets elected, America will turn into a third world country, with massive government welfare programs, unable to generate jobs for it’s citizens, and unable to compete in the global markets. Keep America safe, free and strong … elect McCain/Palin on November 4th.

Dollar for dollar. As an example, let’s assume in his useless infinite wisdom he taxes me an additinal $500,000 a year. Assuming the average person in my firm makes $50,000 a year, I will reduce my staff by 10 employees. We simply will learn to do more with fewer employees. Way to go Obama. What an idiot.

http://ataxingmatter.blogs.com/tax/2008/07/reagans-trickle.html — trickle down does not work and just spreads the wealth and concentrates with the rich. In order for business to grow, they also need consumers (the middle class) with money to purchase goods. See FDR’s the New Deal as a historically comparison. If a business tells you he is going to cut employees for each dollar in taxes spent, don’t buy it. He is cutting off his nose to spite his face as he will still be making a profit off the work of his employees. And, Obama’s plan as has tax cuts and benefits to small business investing in the United States etc. Finally, Obama just wants to turn the progressive tax structure to were it was in the 90s under Clinton/Regan — when the ecomony was booming.
