Brian: Thank you and Congresswoman Bachman for the honest and candid assessment. Why do the voices of those who play by the rules always get drowned out by voices of those who do not and ultimately get caught? Congresswoman Bachman; please keep pressing your point; we need more people in Congress who are watching out for those who play by the rules! Perhaps we need to seriously consider "Term Limits". LR

Brian: Excellent read / point and congratulations to Congresswoman Bachman for speaking up on this issue! Hopefully more congressional folks will realize what a mess THEY have created. Heck if you believe them they don't even know when they have received a "sweetheart deal" from the bank and we expect them to honestly approach this problem? The hard working savers and investors of Americal need to speak up BEFORE the politicians prepare to hand us another sob story and force redistribution of wealth down our throats! Keep a sharp eye out.

Taxpayers may have to pay for the mess, but it was lax Congressional oversight over many years that allowed the conditions that made the crash eventually happen.. Any Congressperson on any committee connected to Fannie/Freddie and any Congressperson with more than 1 term should be dismissed (and jailed)... If those people were not astute enough to spot an eventual meltdown then what were they doing on the committee(s)??

Brian, Thank you for your very pointed commentary. It was quite refreshing to hear Congresswoman Bachman's honest statement considering it is an election year. I wholeheartedly agree with her that the people "responsible" for the problem need to be held accountable. My list includes members of congress who received political contributions from Fannie/Freddie which I consider a conflict of interest, the individual home purchasers who didn't do their homework before signing on the dotted line and now expect my wife and I to pay for their mistake, and finally those lenders who did not clearly explain the conditions of their notes.

Homeowners caused this mess, directly or indirectly. The ones who sold their home at an exorbitant price, the ones who bought a home with no money down and insufficient income, and even the ones who didn't sell but condoned the profiteering; they all contributed to the housing bubble and the resultant rise in foreclosures. The people who did not cause this mess were renters. Yet they are probably going to suffer even more than the homeowners. No bailouts are coming their way, only tax hikes and inflation. Their one avenue for wealth creation, the stock market, is being ruined by politicians intent on doubling the capital gains tax, while more tax credits are being proposed for homeowners. The fact that politicians see homeowners as the victims, and not the culprits, shows what little regard they place on personal responsibility. By pandering to homeowners, politicians are simply digging a deeper hole that will eventually lead to an economic depression.

I just heard Sen Mccain say get to your Post Office and apply for a fixed 30yr. mortgage if you can`t make your mortgage payment so you can raise your family with dignity. Well Ihave been renting for three years waiting for these (victims) and banks to fall on their face so I could raise my family in a home we could afford with dignity. I didn`t buy one or two houses that I couldn`t afford, I didn`t listen to the realtors who told me real estate always goes up buy now or be priced out forever, I didn`t listen to the mortgage brokers that told me I could refi my neg am loan later after my home had appreciated. I have paid my rent, taxes and bills on time. I have saved a 20% down payment Why do I have to pay to bail out these people that I listned to " well my house has already doubled " in 05 and 06 who now cry VICTIM. Where is the dignity for my family while Bernanke, Dodd and congress bail out ALL the people that caused this mess.

As I watched the hearings on Fanny / Freedie the other day, the only senator who seemed to get the fact that it will be us taxpayers who will be on the hook was my favorite phillies pitcher Jim Bunning. If our congress / senate/ president had 1/10th of Bunning's chutzpah, they would come up with another plan.
